The Royal Cornwall Museum emerged from one of the oldest learned organisations in the early 19th century, The Royal Institution of Cornwall established in 1818. The founders of the Institution, key engineers and scientists, created an Institution which had as its objectives to advance the education of the public by encouraging and promoting the study and knowledge of literature, natural sciences, archaeology, history, ethnology, geology and the fine and applied arts, with special reference to Cornwall. The museum and associated library remain true to these objectives today and exist to encourage the use and development of its collections for research and knowledge exchange.
